Experimentation lies at the heart of Derek Von John’s practice, where materials, techniques and visual languages are continually explored and reimagined.

Derek Von John

John was born in El Salvador to American and European parents and later grew up in San Francisco, California. His early years were shaped by both the urban environment of the city and the nearby wilderness and coastline of Marin County.

As a teenager, he studied design and art at the College of Creative Studies in Santa Barbara. Over the years, his work has been shown in gallery exhibitions and has entered private and corporate collections in the United States and Europe. His art has also been featured on music concert posters.

Drawing on years of painting, illustration and creative experimentation, Derek works across abstract, surreal and street-art influences. His practice is characterised by an exploratory approach to materials and techniques, combining acrylic, oil, charcoal and markers with unconventional materials and mixed-media elements.

Rather than committing to a single visual language, Derek moves between abstraction, figurative elements and graphic forms. This freedom to experiment — with materials, surfaces and ideas — remains central to his artistic practice.
